Check the region before you watch

Streaming access and route selection

To watch a region's library, first check where the content is licensed, then choose a matching route. VPNQN offers 110+ countries / 230+ routes; actual playback depends on the platform's checks after you connect.

Platforms may change how they identify regions and enforce playback rules. A route being available does not mean your account has access to that region's content.

The basics

What does “access” really mean?

Streaming platforms may check your connection's exit region, your account region, content licensing and subscription benefits. What people often call “regional access” mainly means presenting a network exit that matches the target library. It does not buy a membership or change where a title is licensed. If a title disappears from search, its regional licensing may differ. If its page opens but playback fails, the cause may be account benefits, billing region or the platform's network checks.

Before choosing a route, check the title and region on the platform itself. After connecting, verify that your exit IP shows the expected region, then reopen the platform and test playback. Saved browser location data, app caches and existing sign-in sessions can keep showing old results after you switch routes. Leaving the playback page, reopening the app or clearing the relevant site data is more useful than switching routes at random.

Check by platform

Regional access compatibility table

The regions below are viewing targets or conditions to check; they do not confirm that a route to that region is available. “Test required” means playback cannot be determined from the region name alone. Regions not verified in our route list are not presented as supported.

Platform How to confirm the target region Availability Suggested route and checks
Netflix Check the title's licensed region first Test required Test playback on an available route in the relevant region; if a proxy warning appears, try another route in the same region
Disney+ Check the title's region and your account's eligible regions Test required Check the corresponding IEPL route first, then verify your account benefits
HBO Max Refer to the platform's current regions and account rules Test required Check the full route list for the target region, then test using a route there
Hulu Check the platform's current regional and subscription requirements Test required For US access, check that the US route and account region match
YouTube Premium Check the regions available for the video and for your subscription benefits separately Test required Choose a route matching the target region; check your account page for subscription benefits
Prime Video Check content licensing, account settings and playback region Test required Check for a route to the target region, then distinguish between an unavailable title and an account playback restriction
BBC iPlayer Check the region and account requirements set by the platform Regional route availability not yet verified Check the full route list to see whether a route is available in the relevant region, then test playback

Route availability may change as the service is updated. Check the routes page for regions not verified in this table; routes in other regions do not confirm access to a particular library.

IP types

Native IPs vs. residential IPs

“Native IP” generally refers to an exit IP whose registered location aligns with where it is actually used; “residential IP” refers to an address from a residential broadband network. These terms describe different attributes: one concerns geographic registration, the other network origin. A route labeled with either term does not guarantee that a platform will allow access.

Platforms may consider an IP's history, network origin, account details and current access behavior. For streaming, matching the actual exit region to the target content region is a more important first check than the route label. If the platform shows a proxy warning, try another available route in the same region. If the warning concerns subscription benefits or content licensing, changing IP type usually will not help.

What to check when choosing a route

  • Region: Does the exit region match the target library?
  • Connection type: IEPL, relayed and direct routes describe network paths, not proof of platform access.
  • Results: Test the title and note the exact message shown.
Playback quality

What you need for 4K and Dolby Vision

High-quality streaming depends on a stable connection over time, as well as support from the platform, title, account, device and display chain. A high speed-test result at one moment does not mean the same quality will hold throughout playback. If buffering becomes frequent during peak hours, first check whether it affects only one route, title or device before switching routes.

Platforms typically adjust the bitrate based on network conditions. If the picture gets blurry, pause briefly to see if quality recovers, then try another route in the same region and stop background transfers that use your connection. Also check the app's video quality settings, your subscription benefits and the quality offered on the title's page. Dolby Vision also requires a compatible source and playback device; smooth playback at standard quality does not mean every device will show the Dolby Vision badge.

VPNQN has no limit on the number of devices connected at the same time, but devices share your local network, and active transfers can affect playback. To troubleshoot, test on one device first, then resume other tasks one by one. This helps distinguish household network congestion from route instability or platform-imposed quality limits. If you choose a monthly subscription, compare the data allowance with your actual viewing usage on the plans page.

When an error appears

How to handle common error codes and messages

Error codes can vary by platform, app and region. A short code alone may not identify the cause; consider it alongside the full message shown by the platform.

Proxy detected or region could not be verified

These errors are usually related to exit IP detection. Check your actual exit region, disconnect and reconnect to a route in the target region, then reopen the playback page. If the same message appears, try another route in that region. Keep a note of the platform, exact message and route you used to help with troubleshooting.

Title unavailable in your current region

First confirm that the title is licensed in the target region, then check your current exit region. A title page may show stale cached data and update only after you reopen the app. If your region is correct but the title remains unavailable, check your account region and the title's licensing; a route cannot change a platform's content rights.

Membership, billing region or account benefits don't match

These messages point to account requirements, so repeatedly switching routes is unlikely to help. Open the platform's account and subscription pages to check your membership status, eligible regions and whether the title requires additional benefits. VPNQN subscriptions and streaming platform memberships are managed separately.

Playback opens but keeps buffering or loses quality

Play other content on the same device to see whether the issue is limited to the title. Then check for local network activity using your connection and try another route in the target region. If standard quality works but higher quality is unstable, also check the title, subscription, device and app settings.

Old library still appears after switching routes

First confirm that your exit region has changed, then close and reopen the platform page or app. Browser site data, app caches and existing sign-in sessions may retain the previous region. Clear the relevant cache and sign in again; judge by testing the target title, not just by looking at the library homepage.
